Sometimes sewer systems need to be repaired or replaced. These repairs can be minor, or it may require a complete replacement in extreme cases. You’ll never know until you call to have your sewer system inspected. There are a lot of reasons why you may need sewer system repairs. Old pipes, tree roots, and erosion are just a few reasons why you may need to have your system repaired and, in a worst-case scenario, replaced.

Here are a few reasons you may be having issues with your sewer system and why you may need to consider repairs or a replacement.

Old Pipes

It’s no secret that sewer systems don’t last forever. If you’re dealing with a home that has a sewer system that’s over 20 to 30 years old, you’re looking at a system that is bound to crack or succumb to other damages eventually. Sometimes a few simple repairs can solve problems with old pipes; other times, you’ll need a full replacement. Over time, sewer pipes can begin to disintegrate, eventually causing soil erosion and even shifting the foundation of structures located above the pipes.

Slow Drain

If your sinks or toilets are draining slowly, you could be dealing with a sewer blockage. The longer you wait to address the issue, the worse it could get. Often times a blockage is fixable without the need for a complete replacement, but that requires a thorough inspection to determine.

Tree Root

Plants require moisture to survive, and sometimes sewer pipes can be a source of said moisture. A cracked pipe serves as a beacon for tree roots as it provides access to the water inside. Once a tree root has penetrated a sewer pipe, the crack can spread as the root continues to grow inside and makes room for other roots to enter the pipe. If this is the case, a replacement may very well be in your future.

Collapsed Sewer Line

Occasionally soil movement or erosion can cause your pipes to collapse. The above issues can also cause a sewer line to collapse. At any rate, your sewer line will likely need to be replaced if this happens.

Septic Pooling

When you begin to see wastewater pooling, it’s time for a septic inspection and repair. Blockages can cause sewage water to back up and begin pooling in your yard. It’s definitely smelly and unsightly, but it can also be a big health hazard. Often times, blockages can be removed, but an inspection will need to be done to ensure that nothing else is causing the pooling in your yard.
